The Irish Kennel Club have shared some touching stories from recent nominations to The Golden Paw Hero Dog Awards 2022 sponsored by PetInsure.ie. The awards aim to find, recognise and reward Ireland’s most courageous, brave and life changing canines and also celebrates The Kennel Clubs centenary year having been founded in 1922.

The Kennel Club Facebook page has featured some of the moving stories of canine bravery and companionship that have been submitted so far.

Meet Dancer - a recent nomination for The Golden Paw Hero Dog Awards 2022!

She has been entered under the Therapy Dog category by her loving owner who had these moving words to share...

"Dancer was got by pure chance 8 years ago and is the most special dog I’ve ever had. She is a therapy dog and visits hospitals and nursing homes and as I work in homecare, she sometimes comes to work with me and is a great hit with the older clients. She brings out the best in everyone. I lost my son 5 years ago to suicide and the one dog who knew something was going on was my girl dancer she never left my side day or night."

Meet Franey, another recent submission for the Golden Paw Hero Dog Awards 2022!

Her family had this incredible story to share...

“On Friday the 30th September 2022, in the early hours of the morning while the family slept, Franey the 14 month old rough collie understood the dangers when a fire broke out at the side of the house! Had it not been for Franey that night, it could have had a sad and different story. She understood what was escalating and quickly alerted her family with continuous barking until Dad got out of the bed to see what the fuss was all about. Franey led him to the kitchen to where he faced the horror that was unfolding! He quickly evacuated his wife, 3 kids & Franey to the neighbour’s house. Help was on hand and the local fire brigade arrived and quickly took control of the situation. Franey is now the local hero of the neighbourhood!”

An exciting panel of judges, yet to be announced, will shortlist winners in each category and overall prizes awarded at a ceremony on the 19th of November in the Clayton Dublin Airport Hotel.

Each category winner will receive 1 year’s pet health insurance from PetInsure.ie, €100 and a hamper of GAIN dog food!

Past Honorary Award Winner, Patron

In May 2022, The Irish Kennel Club was delighted to bestow an Honorary Golden Paw Hero Dog Award to Patron, a Ukrainian Jack Russell terrier who detects landmines. First Secretary, Mr. Dmytro Shchedrin, accepted the award at the IKC Festival of Dogs in Leopardstown Racecourse on behalf of the heroic pooch. This was not Patron’s first accolade, having previously been awarded the Medal of Courage from President Zelensky. Since the war in Ukraine began in February, 2 year old Patron had sniffed out over 200 undetonated explosive devices and has now won the hearts of many in the country with over 350,000 followers on Instagram.
