Arena di Verona - The 101st Verona Opera Festival – 7th June – 7th September 2024
Famous as the location for Shakespeare’s tale of the young lovers Romeo and Juliet, Verona also stages the summer highlight of the Italian Opera festival calendar in the splendid Roman Arena, built in the 1st century AD to accommodate 20,000 spectators and used for opera since the 19th century. Located in the Piazza Bra in the heart of the ancient city on the river Adige, the Arena di Verona provides a magnificent performance space with the stage erected there every year being the biggest in the world. The configuration for Opera accommodates an audience of up to 16,000 people. The first Opera season opened on 10 August 1913 in commemoration of the centenary of Verdi’s birth and since then, summer seasons have been performed continually at the arena, except in 1915–18 and 1940–45, when Europe was convulsed in war. Many famous singers have been discovered there, including Maria Callas and Placido Domingo. This year’s festival promises to be an event not to be missed by opera fans around the world.
“Attending a performance at the Arena di Verona is one of the most spectacular outdoor experiences in the world for opera lovers” said Caroline Quigley, General Manager of Institute for Culture Travel/Keith Prowse. “We have a few places left on our two escorted tours and we also have private bespoke packages available throughout the festival, so get booking now for 2024 or start planning ahead for 2025!”
