According to recent reports, charges by certain pharmacies on weekly blister packs have been slammed as ‘a stealth tax on the most vulnerable’.  The packs, mostly used by the elderly and patients who need to take various medications on a daily basis, breakdown weekly medications into days of the week. This service is particularly vital for patients with Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and similar diseases. Some pharmacies have announced they will now be charging €2.50 per week for this previously free service, adding an extra €10 per month minimum onto some people’s already costly medication bills.

David Beggs owner and MD of Pure Pharmacy has received comments from pharmacists across the Pure chain that “some patients have already approached us as they cannot afford this extra charge and are afraid that they will no longer be able to get their medicine dispensed in weekly blister packs. At Pure Pharmacy we do not charge for this added service. Pure use weekly trays to provide an individualised service specific to patients needs .The trays can accommodate complex patient medication regimes and are integral in minimising confusion that may arise with individual tablet boxes in certain patient groups.”

Said David Beggs, himself a pharmacist by profession “We set up Pure Pharmacy with a vision of delivering a first class service in the communities in which we serve, with top level pharmacy professionals – but part of that service and our concept is lower prices. We buy competitively and we pass that value on to our customers.  We can offer All Statins for €4 for 1 month’s supply, Ventolin for €3.50 for 1 inhaler and Aspirin at €3.50 for 1 month’s supply”.
